When To Start?
You may start introducing solid to your baby at their age 4 to 6 months. Before then breast milk or formula will work best for them. For ones who choose to breastfeed like myself, (as recommended by WHO) you wouldn't mind to wait until your baby get his full 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding (without other kind of intake: juice, cereal or porridge).
Why 6 months?
The reason for baby to wait until they're 6 months old is not because by to let him to sleep through the night. But it is mainly because most babies are phisically ready to get their first taste of solids. Their sucking reflex will slowly coordinate with their chewing reflex. This is important, because sucking reflex let baby's tounge to push foods out from their mouth instead of pushing in to then swallow the foods. However, age is not always determine the readiness of each babies, as they are unique creatures. So it's very important to look for the sign if baby is ready for solids.
How to know if baby is ready for solids?
- Baby is able to sit up well (with or without support)
- Baby is able to hold the head and neck up properly
- Baby show the interest on foods that you're eating
- Baby already has at least double of her/his birth weight
- Baby has started developing pincer grasp, the motor skills to pick things with their fingers
- Baby has started developing chewing skills
I was first introducing M to solids after he got his 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding. At that time, he was already sitting very well without support, he has 4 teeth, and fis pincer grasp was excelent too. However, every babies are unique, so just follow your gut and instinct.
Please remember that at this stage, we are only introducing them to solids, you still need to continue giving them breast milk or formula, as hey will probably start to really eat only when they're around 8 months old. So try to have fun and explore the ways that can suit best for you and your baby.
