The terms of baby led weaning (BLW) was first quoted by Gill Rapley, a former health visitor and midwife. The meaning of BLW is as simple as it words, which is to let your baby lead the weaning, let him/her feed him/herself since the very start of weaning phase. But it's very important for parents to know if your baby is ready for solids.
The idea of BLW slowly developed into a more fashionably way of weaning your baby. As soon as your baby is ready to reach out for foods, all we need to do is let them explore and play with it until they get the idea of put it into their mouth, chew it then swalow it. It probably has the same method of early initiative of breastfeeding (the process of putting the baby skin to skin on your tummy soon after they've delivered, to then let them move towards your breast and start to suck). And by saying this I would say that the purpose is to actually let the baby learn faster by exploring with their own hands and senses, no spoon, no purees, and soon you'll notice that it's actually more fun and practical.
You can start for BLW by giving your baby a suitable size of chopped fruits. You may get them steamed if you like, but raw fruits are awesome too. Then you can slowly introduce them with vegetables, poultry and meats. You may need to check on the baby food charts to give you some inspirations. This may be the best way of introducing your baby with the family meals just like the one that you're having. There's no need to buy any food processor or baby cubes. Your baby are actually have been tried so hard to be just like you, why the fuss of treat them differently in the feeding time?
However, it is important to know that BLW may not necessarily make your baby to grow as a good eater kids as it all depends on the habits that they're picking up from you or other family members or friends in the later of their age. BLW aslo not guarantee they will be expert in chewing foods. I mean every babies are still carrying their chance of getting choked anytime anywhere, despite of how careful we are as a parents. The benefits of BLW that i can feel the most is that both you and (at the most) your baby will have a fun experience on the ideas of foods. Plus you may bring them out without having worry of all the baby cutlery and preparation.
Some parents worry that with BLW, their baby will not eating enough foods, that the baby will just playing around with the foods and never really eat. But what they don't know is that six months of age is actually when the baby being introduce to solid, not to really eat solids. Breast milk will still be the main source until they're starting for proper meals. And most babies are started to need proper meals at around 12 months old. And with BLW, it's actually easier for us to observe the signs.
BLW is totally different from puree way. But whichever you choose to do, they're both as good as long as we observe and follow what's best for the baby.
