Rainy day has come. This is the battle period for every moms, in which their kids may catching cold/flu/coughing or even diarrhea.
I was grown up with a family that appreciate a natural healing methods, specially for sickness like flu, colds and coughing. We prefer home remedies. Knowing that syrup medicine that doctor always give us basically are just sugar-ish water with flavour, and the pills won’t work without proper rest and diets too. So what’s the point of taking.
Since M was born, I’ve tried my best to avoid giving him pharmaceutical medicine, specially antibiotics. So whenever M catching flu, colds or coughing, I’ll first try these home remedies:
Plenty of rest
The basic remedy for colds and flu is always to have plenty of rest. Comfy bed, dimmed room and puffy pillows can help your kid get a comfortable rest to recharge.
Plenty of fluid
When we get sick we need more fluids to keep up the metabolism in good order. Give your kid plain water or fruit juice to make them keep hydrated.
Vicks and socks for coughing
Gently massage the feet with plenty of vicks vaporub then put on the socks. I started to do this when M was still a tiny baby. When M was a little older, I rub it on his chest and back too. It works amazingly every time!
Chicken soup for flu, colds and coughing
Chicken soup is a must for sick kids. It has everything they need to recover: the fluids, the nutrient from the chicken and the veggies and the steamy of the hot bowl too.
Lemon and honey for sore throat
You can start to try this remedy after your kid reach 1 year old, because honey can give bad effect for young baby. Cut and squeeze a fresh lemon, mix it with a spoonful of honey and warm water, then sip it slowly. Add a mint leaves for optional.
Homemade saline solution for blocked nose
Natural ways is always the best approach to take care of our family. Blocked nose can be very uncomfortable for kids. Try to make your own saline solution. All you need is a cup of warm water, a teaspoon of salt, and half teaspoon of baking soda (optional). Mix them all together and drop into the nose for about 2-3 drops each side. If you have unused travel spray bottle, you may use it to spray over instead of drop it over.
Baking soda paste for bug bites
As the one who love to do baking, I always have plenty of baking soda in my kitchen. Make your own calamine lotion using baking soda and iced water to reduce the swelling, pain and itchy.
Over-toasted bread for diarrhea
This works best for everybody too! Just toast your bread a little bit longer than usual, the burnt part act as carbon that can neutralise your stomach from any bad bacteria.
Hot shower or steamy water with cajuput oil for flu, respiratory problem and bloated tummy
As Indonesian mom, it’s a must for me to always have cajuput oil at home. Whenever any of us has flu or respiratory problem or bloated tummy, I’ll pour some cajuput oil into an empty bucket and half fill it with boiled water, then put it on the floor just beside our bed right before we go to sleep. Another way is bring the bucket into the shower room while we’re taking a hot shower. The steam effect works very well.
Please bear in mind that these remedies may not work well for some of us. And always be cautious if worse symptoms appears, as you may need to consult with your doctor.
